“Vocational training has a tradition at Marl Chemical Park. For more than 70 years, we have trained young men and women. More than 16,000 have started their training and—more importantly—have completed it successfully so far.” These are the opening remarks of Dr. Hans Jürgen Metternich, head of Evonik Vocational Training North, with which he welcomes 207 new apprentices at the Marl site; 34 of them will be trained for or on behalf of other companies and do not belong to the Group. In the selection process, the department read 2,053 applications and carried out 925 employment tests.

Evonik Industries laid the foundation stone for a new, large plant to produce functionalized polybutadienes in Marl, Germany. The plant, with an annual capacity of several thousand metric tons, is scheduled for completion in the middle of 2013. The specialty chemicals company's investment in its largest production site worldwide is in the mid double-digit million € range and will create 15 new jobs. Functionalized polybutadienes, which Evonik plans to market under the name POLYVEST® HT, are used mainly in sealing compounds for insulated glass windows and for adhesives used in the automotive and electronics industries, for example.

Chemical manufacturer Oxea today announced that it has once again expanded its production capacity for carboxylic acids within only a very short period of time. The company successfully increased the production performance of the
carboxylic acid plant in Marl, Germany, beyond target by 20 percent. Already the market leader with the most comprehensive portfolio worldwide, Oxea now serves the continuously rising global demand for carboxylic acids with this increased capacity. Carboxylic acids can be used for manufacturing energy-efficient lubricant esters for environmentally friendly refrigeration units such as air conditioners and refrigerators or specialty plasticizers, among
others. Oxea currently operates four production plants for carboxylic acids world-wide and additionally plans to bring on-stream another new, state-of-the-art carboxylic acid plant in Oberhausen, Germany, at the end of 2012.

of higher alcohols. For this purpose, Oxea invested in additional hydration capacities at the Oberhausen site. In the third quarter of 2012, the product nheptanol will be commercially available, followed by 3-methyl butanol, 2-
methyl butanol and n-pentanol. Higher alcohols are not only indispensable components for the fragrance and flavor industry, they are also required for the production of varnish, paint and lubricant additives or are used as special
solvents in the pharmaceutical industry.
