Thanks to the central position in Europe, almost 50 percent of the 495 million inhabitants of the European Union can be reached by truck from the Ruhr region. The third largest European urban agglomeration is also the best developed European region in terms of traffic connections. A tightly meshed network of roads, rails, and waterways connects the Ruhr region with the national and European markets and international ports like Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Hamburg. The special high-performance infrastructure is also reflected in the international airports of Düsseldorf, Cologne, Dortmund, and Münster/Osnabrück, and the largest inland port in Duisburg, from where goods are transported around the globe.
Besides a high-performance infrastructure, secure supply via pipelines is of strategical importance to the chemical industry. The Ruhr region is characterized by a particularly tightly meshed pipeline network connecting both the large chemical sites to each other and to other European chemical sites.
The Ruhr Metropolis never rests: Day and night the traffic arteries pulsate in the easily accessible conurbation. Whether by car, by train, over the water or through the air - the destination is never far off.
