The chemical industry in the Ruhr region looks back on a long tradition. Mainly established in the 19th century, the enterprises have participated in the industrial boost and have made a decisive contribution to prosperity in the region. The rich coal deposits of the adjacent coal mines were the source of energy and raw materials. Today, with a turnover of approx. 41 billion euros and more than 100,000 employees (2009, source: VCI) in more than 400 chemical enterprises, the chemical industry is – second to the metal industry – the strongest industrial sector of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In European comparison, North Rhine-Westphalia with its core areas Ruhr region and Rhineland is the most important chemical region – an economic region with a brilliant future!
