The traditional industrial regions of the most densely populated German federal state have developed towards start-of-the-art and attractive industrial locations. The reason is not least the enormous innovative power of the educational and research institutions in North Rhine- Westphalia. Especially the chemical industry takes advantage of the universities’ exploratory urge, because the development of products fit for the future and efficient processes for chemical enterprises has top priority.

The federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia has the most dense university and science landscape in Europe. The state sets its sights on outstanding training of young scientists, excellent research, and intensive cooperation of science and economy.

68 universities, more than 50 independent research facilities – 12 of which Max Planck Institutes and 41 institutes of the Fraunhofer association – as well as 100 research institutes at universities contribute to meeting this demand of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In the Ruhr region, university graduates-to-be will find an offer of 500 different degree courses at 20 universities and universities of applied sciences. At 13 faculties for chemistry, 260 professors train 31% of the German chemists and 43% of the chemical engineers.
